Listened to the Ombudsman for Children this morning @RadioBrendanRTE. To think that he met with the Min for Education months ago & that his request for a plans to be drafted for schools & exams in case of further pandemic restrictions was ignored is irresponsible & negligent. 1/
Neither the Minister nor the Department have given any indication that their actions this past year have centred on students. There seems to be no consideration for the welfare or education of young people in this country. As an educator I think this is unacceptable. 2/
We are now left in a situation where plans are being made on the fly & in an emergency. This will not benefit any learners and we’ll be years making up for lost experiences of students this past 12 months. The lack of leadership & organisation is beyond embarrassing. 3/
It’s another indication of the need for restructuring within the Department of Education to make sure that the lived experiences of students is at the core of decisions & that they are made by those with knowledge of teaching & learning at all levels for all learners. 4/
I wish I had answers to solve the complex problems of how students get back to school safely and how 6th years going to get to 3rd level will be matriculated, but these issues should have been decided by panels of experts & stakeholders months ago. 5/
I can’t imagine how parents with school-going children, how teachers/SNAs without childcare, students & teachers with health issues, principals without guidance, teenagers without social contact, children stuck at home are feeling, but I am livid with this situation. 6/
