This is an educational thread for how to weed out devotees. What’s a devotee, I hear the non disabled people ask? Well - they are people (generally men) who like to connect with disabled people because they have a fetish about your impairment.
Yes. It’s a thing. And common.

2/ Firstly, if you’re an amputee, you generally already know about this. Devotees come in all types but the overwhelming majority fantasise about amputee women. Followed by wheelchair users and blind people. Who knew?
A documentary about this.
A documentary about this.
3/ Second point - some people don’t mind devotees. Who else is going to treat you like a goddess, buy you a house, a car? is the rationale. Knock yourselves out, I’m not here to judge. In my experience, the majority of devotees are covertly stalking you and stealing your pics.
4/ I haven’t done a weed out for ages, so I anticipate I’ll have some devotees on my Facebook wall. I generally find them & block them - I’m a bit creeped out by the stealing photos thing. Once I quizzed a devotee about why he was attracted to crip women - he said ‘helplessness’.
5/ Nope. That’s rapey and gross. So I check every so often. If you’re disabled and would be similarly creeped out, you can do the same.
Here’s how to do it.
Here’s how to do it.
6/ Not all of them will be your Facebook friends. Some will be ‘followers’. Facebook won’t tell you much about them, but you can look at their listed groups and likes.
If you go to a popular devotee page or group, you can generally find people who are in the devotee scene.

7/ Generally, the pages will have names like this. ‘Amputee love’.
Turns out I have eight ‘friends’ who like this.
Sometimes they are amputees, but it’s pretty rare. I always check they’re not disabled and just into the devotee scene.

8/ The usual amount of exploitation goes on in these groups for women who come from other countries and have their legs blown off by land mines, etc. No judgement there, either - for some, it’s a good job.

9/ Not all of the photos from the websites are sourced with permission. Often they are stolen,
Sometimes there are ‘related pages’.
I have fifteen ‘friends’ who like ‘Amputee World’. This makes me feel wildly unsafe.

10/ Often, they will follow random disabled ‘inspiration’ pages. Large groups of devotees share these innocuous personal pages of disabled women, especially if they expose stumps or show how they put prosthetic legs on, etc.
This is non consensual.

11/ Some groups like this, ARE consensual. I’m not going into BIID or wannabes here, you get to google that.
I have zero concerns about this. Your kinks are your business, if you’re doing this with consenting adults & not covertly.
Some groups are very safe. Others, not so much.

12/ The people who upset me the most are the ones who come up with peer support concepts but use it to get information about of disabled people. It’s - gross. This is an old page. I’m trying not to share too many current pages or groups.
You get the gist.

13/ If I look at my so called ‘friends’ who like these pages, I see none of them have ever interacted with me.
Here’s Jeff. We have 30 mutual friends. Some are my personal friends who he has ‘collected’.
This is Jeff.

14/ Jeff never shares things about his proclivities on his wall. Just - about god. The occasional family message.
If I look at his follows, it’s thousands of disabled people.
1994 page likes. Ms Wheelchair. Diagnostic pages. He’s a very busy man.

15/ Just because this creeps me out, it doesn’t mean it should creep you out. But - if you’re like me with big stalking triggers, it’s worth knowing about this.
I’m ‘followed’ by about a thousand people. I try not to get worried about this. But - once I found my photo on a site.

16/ Information is power, friends. Stay safe.
