In the past, no interviews used to be conducted and the proposal was expected to be broadly interesting/competent. Nowadays, interviews are tough & the proposal is expected to be solid, conceptually and methodologically. 2/
You apply for a doctoral programme because you have identified a question that you are curious about & you would like to study this question extensively for three to four years. 3/
It is expected that you read around this question & as you read, you identify a number of academics whose work resonates with your own thinking. 4/
Check out where these academics work and apply to these institutions. You may want to think twice before submitting an application where you leave the 'proposed supervisor' section blank [end of thread]
