It was a very brave team selection from Rodgers, matching Liverpool’s 4-3-3 - whereas I would’ve personally played a 3-4-3/5-4-1.
This would’ve removed the 1-vs-1 battle with Mane/Salah against Pereira/Amartey & offered an extra passing lane when building.

Instead, it was a central 3; Maddison/Tielemans/Ndidi vs. Liverpool’s.
This was an attempt to remove the “numerical superiority” in the middle, but the ability of all Liverpool midfielders to beat an opponent (dribble) virtually recreates this advantage.

The first-half (minus the final 10’) was controlled by Liverpool. Their counter-press caused #LCFC to make mistakes in their own third.
This was why I’d play with a “5” as the extra passing lane would’ve forced Liverpool to push another man into their press (v. risky).

By playing Amartey at RB, Rodgers wanted an aerial “out” ball for Schmeichel - which he did offer on occasion.
This wasn’t the same for Pereira, who played extremely well on the left-side, but he did opt to cut inside & utilise his right-foot (slowing play down).

The focus of #LCFC’s attack was down the left, as TAA is the definitely the “weaker” defender. Barnes is a more direct winger & Pereira is a better attacking full-back, so that was to be expected. It was slightly disconnected due to the partnership/Pereira on wrong side.

As the first-half wore on, #LCFC started to find joy. This was for a couple of reasons; the press wasn’t as intense from Liverpool (due to fatigue), & the Foxes were utilising the ball behind the defensive line for Vardy to chase - Henderson/Kabak struggled on the turn.

The second-half reverted to Liverpool’s control - their press/connective play returned to a very high level.
Albeit with some fortune (the rebound of TAA’s shot), their goal was unbelievably good. Firmino’s awareness of Salah (& pass to find him) is of elite quality.

But, the mental fortitude from #LCFC to stay in the game & to capitalise on the defensive errors - was brilliant.

It’s simplistic, but effective. You remove the counter-press of Liverpool by playing long. If you lose the ball, it’s either with their GK or defenders - instead of with their advancing midfielders in a position of danger for #LCFC.
This is their best asset.

The end of the first-half highlighted the potential joy for #LCFC; with Barnes/Vardy both being rewarded for their high positioning by having/creating chances.
You sort of have to force their errors - we did that in the second-half - they’re not invincible.

To enable the comeback we had to be strong defensively. The entire back four were brilliant, their individual decision-making was exemplary & they worked very well as a unit - despite never being fielded together before & playing somewhat out of possession.

We perhaps lacked quality in possession, and it definitely wasn’t a good performance from #LCFC on the ball - but, wow, what a result. You can win games by not playing great, and to do that versus the champions is remarkable.
