THREAD:

What did Jesus mean when he commanded us to “love thy neighbour” (Matthew 22:39)?

Since Jesus himself is love (1 John 4:16), let’s consider his example...

1/

👇
- He came in the flesh (1 John 4:2)
- He dined with tax collectors and sinners (Mark 2:15)
- He visited the sick (Matthew 8:14)
- He visited the grieving (John 11)
- He visited the lonely (Luke 7:11-17)
- He expected his disciples to visit prisoners (Matthew 25:37)

2/
- He preached the Word to large crowds (Mark 10:1)
- He fed a gathering of more than 5000 people (Matthew 14:13-21)
- He taught the Word in places of worship (Luke 4:15)
- He celebrated at a wedding feast (John 2:1-12)
- He physically washed his disciples’ feet (John 13:1-20)

3/
- He observed the Lord’s Supper in the presence of others (Matthew 26:26-30)
- He was baptized (Matthew 3:13-17) and expects the same of his followers (Matthew 28:18-20)
- He commands his followers to be hospitable to one another (1 Peter 4:9)

Jesus is our Immanuel—our “God with us.” If Jesus had decided to “stay home” then there’d be no sacrifice for sins. On the contrary, he left the comforts of his heavenly home to be with his people and to demonstrate God's love for us (John 6:38, Romans 5:8).

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8
