Still struggling to process this:

McCarthy was on the phone with President Trump as the windows to his office were being shattered and his own life was on the line, screaming for Trump to call off his mob.

“Well, Kevin, I guess they care more about this election than you do.”
It’s staggeringly cruel and violent.

I’m not surprised, but for a President of the United States to be on the phone with a terrorized House Minority Leader begging for his life and his staff’s life, and to say that-

it’s beyond my moral comprehension.
And then McCarthy went to see him, two weeks later, to ask for his donor list as corporate donations dried up. Trump refused.

Imagine having to do that. He didn’t do it out of nowhere. He was sent by someone.

Just imagine, given what we know now, how brutal that must have felt.
I’ve hesitated all this time to call Trump a sadist. I’ve called him everything else in the book.

But this? To have your most senior leadership in the house pleading for his life and the lives of his staff and to respond that way?

It’s sadistic. It’s pathological. It’s a crime.
My mind can’t handle what it takes to do it.

But I guess that says something— that there are still unfathomable depths of cruelty within him, and the well is bottomless.
And just for clarity’s sake, @brianschatz has the exact language, and is, I suspect, equally horrified. https://twitter.com/brianschatz/status/1360583284837797888
