A core aspect of Rem's character is her having a tiny circle of people she would give everything to protect. She welcomes to change to her environment, her home, and any change may as well be considered a threat.
Now look at Garfiel. Much like how Rem is stuck in the mansion, denying any potential outside elements ruining things, the same goes for Garfiel. The details of their conflicts are different but the core of their feelings towards their environment is the same.
And they both feel that this burden of protecting their environment, or specifically the loved ones within that environment, is a burden they have to shoulder by their lonesome. (Yes, there is an Arc 3-4 Subaru parallel in there somewhere as well)

By the way, the author confirmed Garfiel's feelings for Ram are genuine, and not really the product of them shifting from Rem towards her sister after the former was eaten.
