Top 1v1 save from #Schmeichel

Not sure how the commentators missed his touch!

#Schmeichel does well to delay his engagement in order to make sure #Salah cannot dribble round him & his use of the L block rather than the spread is an excellent call as it means he can’t be megged!
#Schmeichel is excellent at saving central 1v1s but he usually struggles to save tight angled 1v1s.

This is due to his over reliance on the spread & it meant he often gets megged, if he now starts using of the L block for wide 1v1s this will cut out a big weakness in his game!
He’s just done it again against #Firmino!

The fact it now seems #Schmeichel is now using different premeditated barriers for different types of 1v1s is huge!!!

This could turn him from a top 6 #PremierLeague 1v1 stopper to the best 1v1 stopper in the #PremierLeague!
I used to use #Schmeichel as an example of why using only 1 type of barrier regardless of the type of 1v1 was not a good idea as each type of barrier has different strengths & weaknesses but now it seems like he’s realised & adapted his game!

Looks like I need a new example!
If you are interested in the optimum strategy a GK can use if they wish to maximise their chance of saving 1v1 situations read the thread below. This graphic shows the key conclusions:

Close & central = spread
Close & wide = block (with smother a close 2nd)
Long range = wait https://twitter.com/jhdharrison1/status/1273312389233082369
