1. Just from an Irish perspective, one of getting the country back on its feet, and not committing hari-kari by trying to be the best boys in the class again. This time last year our experts told us it was âconsensusâ to keep the covid express from Bergamo flying.
A while later we ended up with a chronic PPE/mask shortage. People probably died because of it so we made a decision to act and go to where the PPE was & get it, even though we had to kiss Communist Party ass to do so. In a pinch, it was the right call given the emergency.
Of course the Communists played power games with âmask diplomacyâ, at a point, Ireland seem to realise that this was more âbar scene from Star Warsâ than coordinated process. We turned Aer Lingus into a de facto auxiliary Air Force heavy lift service & sent it to China for PPE.
It worked, slowly we bypassed the choked up logistics lines. Did we pay too much for PPE? Probably but it doesnât matter, it got done and it was a combination of government action and private players âinnovatingâ as they went along.
Now we have a vaccine crisis, itâs a crisis, the country is on its knees & in general, the Irish are actually too good at putting on a brave face, relative silence is our version of the English âstiff upper lipâ. Break point approaches from homes that arenât on a Govât payroll.
Itâs time to do another version of the PPE airlift, this time for vaccines. Get the Sputnik V, so it might piss off some people in Brussels, so what, they arenât trying to save a family business or worrying about next months payroll. They are trying to save face.
Sputnik V seems to be effective, according to the Lancet & others. I donât even know if itâs available in quantity but if we can kiss ass to get PPE from Beijing, then we can buy medicine that works from Russia & perhaps the same humiliation routine wonât be demanded.
Now I know what I outline above is out of line with âthe consensusâ but the consensus was wrong a year ago too and we imported covid quicker than was necessary, perhaps we should change the game and import vaccine from wherever we can get it from the fastest. Itâs an emergency.
