We collected statistics of traffic deaths, accidents and injuries from 11 Libyan cities and put them together in one document. We had the best data from Benghazi and Misurata. Then comes Zliten and Sabha.
We collected statistics of traffic deaths, accidents and injuries from 11 Libyan cities and put them together in one document. We had the best data from Benghazi and Misurata. Then comes Zliten and Sabha.
This is a report with not much analysis, the goal is to get the data out there and start working on analysis. It is from multiple public Libyan sources, either police departments or Ministry of Interior reports.
According to the WHO 2015, Libya was the first in the world road traffic deaths per population: 73.4 road traffic deaths per 100k, highest in the world. In 2018 it fell to 26,1 deaths per 100k.

Although traffic deaths in Tripoli, #Libya's biggest city, are very slowly decreasing, at least 5 people die every day due to traffic accidents. This is a terrible statistic.

We can also clearly see that in Benghazi, the summer is most deadly in traffic. July 2020 was particularly deadly in the traffic, with 44 dead in ONE month.
However last years, most of those who end up in accidents and get either injured or dead, get injured.

#Misurata had a trend of decreasing amount of traffic deaths which might be going up again.
What is mostly however worrying is that the city has a terrible traffic deathrate: although the city is smaller than Benghazi, the amount of deaths in numbers is comparable.

Midsized cities such as #Zawiya and #Tobruk have either seen a worsening or stagnating traffic safety statistics.
Libyans keep dying and getting injured in constant, world leading rates. And remember that severe injuries lead to paralysis, amputations, head trauma.. big burden

Those that had a drop in their traffic death and injury statistics, such as #Sebha in southern Libya, is going up in the traffic deaths, accidents and injuries.
Traffic deaths and injuries in Libya are preventable, and further data collection, analysis and working on policy recommendations as well as applying preventive interventions is needed.
In addition, trauma care is neglected and public awareness on this emergency is important.
