Smallpox eradicated because there was a vaccine that did not need to be refrigerated and where obvious when it worked (pustule developed) and where it was obvious when infected (lab test was not necessary). Covid completely different. So it’s a case of how we live / adapt to it
People talk about virus mutating and escaping vaccine. Growing immunity means mutations that can evade immune response have advantage. But we know coronaviruses are more stable than flu so hope will be this is gradual and easier to adapt to than it is for developing flu vaccines
Will mean virus continues to circulate for many many years. Next few months crucial. Vaccinating while infection levels high is perfect breeding ground for mutations - so scientists advising govt say that’s why lifting has to be gradual. Seasonality could help bring cases down
