Some observations after finishing a week on the @LivHospitals ICU looking after #COVID19 patients
The ICU is still extremely busy. No signs of let up yet. Sick patients still arriving as well as transfers in from other hospitals because they’ve exceeded their surge capacity. @CMCCN_ODN doing a great job of making sure every patient who needs ICU care can receive it
None of the COVID patients I cared for this week was over the age of seventy. Not one. If they were at home now they wouldn’t yet have been called up for a vaccine. Despite the great pace of vaccination that were seeing, ICU demand unlikely to drop yet unless we #HandsFaceSpace
Lots of talk in the media about this as a second wave. For #Liverpool this is very much a third wave. The October peak meant that @LivHospitals was hit hard by surging demand and the ICU was full for weeks then as it is now. Starting to feel somewhat relentless.
Concerning to see the case rates in Liverpool have stopped falling quickly and are levelling off. Still far too high. If we don’t suppress transmission further we may yet be looking at further surges in the city.
