The upcoming water desalination plant by the BMC in Manori, in Mumbai, is a huge waste of money.

Mumbai is one of the wettest megacities in the world. We receive enough and more rainfall in the MMR region thanks to the south west monsoon winds and the western ghats 1/n
Mumbai's need for water is 4200MLD, present supply is 3800MLD through lakes and reservoirs around the city.

900MLD is lost due to leakage during distribution! Deficit of 400MLD can easily be solved by plugging this leakage, rather than this desalination plant. 2/n
Why do we need a desert technology in a tropical area like Mumbai?

Moreover, cost of energy is almost half the cost of desalinated water! The waste product of the process is brine, which is known to be hazardous to coastal environment. 3/n
Any system which doesn't provide opportunities, to incurr massive recurring expenses is anathema to the Shiv Sena ruled BMC.

Mumbai doesn't need a desalination plant, when cheaper alternatives exist. 4/4
