If you're still undecided who to vote this upcoming SAMAHAN Election, let me offer you some perspectives with my experience in SAMAHAN, being an Ex-Political Party Member and now a "Normal" CE Student
—a thread.
SAMAHAN Elections have always been interesting & controversial, much like magnifying the actual PH Elections. Diri jud nimo makita on how far some people could go bc of desperation & diri pud manggawas who’s really genuine to serve the best interest of their future constituents.
This election's batch of candidates have interesting dynamics and are undeniably capable. Still, we're left with these questions: who among them would best represent the students? And who would serve as our collective voice without urging them to do so?
All these political brandings, gimmicks, looks, and how they compose their tweets don’t add value to the service we are getting from them. For introspection, look at their PLATFORMS because it’ll tell you a lot about what path and direction they will take for the next SAMAHAN.
But let’s all be cautious of recycled and paraphrased platforms that have been on every election for years. Look for effective platforms that will perform well in the entire term. Platforms speak a lot about the candidates esp if they participated or personally crafted them.
Also, don’t be blinded by experiences in SAMAHAN because it might not prove anything; always do your research on whether they contributed significantly during their term and not only using their decorative and empty affiliations to their advantage.
It’s time to assess whether those who are claiming their experiences in SAMAHAN have already been forwarding their platforms during their term than safekeeping it for their own political agenda or because they’re groomed to run for next elections. Which is an entirely diff story!
SCB Positions hold big responsibilities but you don’t need any experience in SAMAHAN because with willingness to serve and deliver, anyone could easily adjust. It just takes us to choose leaders that would best fit and go beyond their “job descriptions.”
Advocacies are also great to look for in candidates, esp if it’s genuine! They can fake it all they want but it’ll become apparent in the long run. Sooner or later, fake advocacies will be poorly executed, making it obvious that they’re just using it for elections. (Disgusting!)
By this time, we already know what a SAMAHAN should be because that’s what every candidates’ been offering to the table. It’s now our time to tell them the SAMAHAN that we DESERVE.
The SAMAHAN we deserve has a LONG-TERM and EFFECTIVE plan of addressing issues INSIDE and OUTSIDE the University. It should’t scale down to merely an event-organizing body or an entity that offers band-aid solutions for the sake of “doing something.”
The SAMAHAN we deserve should know what it is fighting for! It should fight FOR and WITH the students. It should not be afraid to STAND and release STATEMENTS about RELEVANT issues without being controlled by the ADMIN or any external organization/s and worry for its reputation.
The SAMAHAN we deserve should resonate with the voices, not only of the students, but of the OPPRESSED and MARGINALIZED. It should bridge the GAP between the student body and the socio-political realities and injustices experienced by people whose voices need to be amplified.
That’s why it’s crucial and important for us to be critical on choosing our leaders because by effecting change within our university means we can contribute greatly on what lies ahead for the future of our country.
If we really want to see positive and lasting change in SAMAHAN, after careful evaluation of the candidates, I can say that QUIMOD, TUYONGAN, and TIAGAN deserve the votes of every Atenean. I believe more than competence, we need people with INTEGRITY to represent us!
