This day, 356 years ago Chhatrapati #ShivajiMaharaj's navy fought against Portuguese, liberating the port town Basrur of Udupi.

He broke monopoly of foreign traders & restored land's sovereignty.

This is being celebrated as 'Basruru Independence Day'.

Basrur is on the west coast of Bharat in Kundapur taluk of Udupi District, Karnataka.

A well-known ancient river port town, formerly known as Vasupura.

The town had a number of roads and alleys for pilgrims, traders, craftsmen, artists and weavers.

Once it was a town of keris (lanes) and keres (lakes).

Each keri being named after a guild, having a temple of its own & a bustling market.

Today remains just names of the keris like Gudikara Keri, Ravutha Keri, Mandi Keri, Basadi Keri, Vilasa Keri etc.

The historical port city is also famous for its temples.

Of the 24 temples in the city, Tauleshwar Temple, Guppi Sadananda Temple are quite popular.

Ibn Batua, a pilgrim of the west, mentions the Basrur he encountered while on his way to Malabar.
