Can't help but think that our current pandemic hole is a consequence of decades of discharging so many of our mortal realities out of our home lives and into modern medicine
It is striking that many people will have no experience of witnessing death, and the realities around it

That responsibility has almost entirely been given to the health care service. This is a modern development
It makes me feel, as a doctor, like am part of a system holding some dirty secrets away from, and on behalf of, society
It makes me feel, as a doctor, like am part of a system holding some dirty secrets away from, and on behalf of, society
And the secrets are many
-The distress and discomfort of death
-The rationing of health care - this is a reality
-The realities of psychiatric seclusion and restraint

-The realities of psychiatric seclusion and restraint
-That medical and psychiatric treatments can make some people worse
-The relationship between healthcare and law enforcement, and the sometimes non-benign impact this may have on people's lives
-The relationship between healthcare and law enforcement, and the sometimes non-benign impact this may have on people's lives
It feels like suddenly this risk, the difficult decisions, that was previously held by healthcare has suddenly been exposed and noone quite knows what to do with it
Perhaps this is a function of capitalism - death, distress, and illness, has been split off from our lives and been located in our healthcare services
I wonder whether we can re-integrate this somehow
