Because if one of them is let in, however cosmopolitan the area is, they eventually transform it into a ghetto of their own. From my own experience, I'll share an anecdote. Anna Nagar in Chennai was created as a new residential project in the 1960s-70s and was meant to be https://twitter.com/khanumarfa/status/1360191825504477186
an upmarket, cosmopolitan, vibrant locality. Over the years, it has grown to be one and is one of the prime residential and commercial zones in the city. Most importantly, it is self-sustained, functions like a town within a city. Now, come to the 3rd Avenue in Anna Nagar East.
The only mosque in Anna Nagar is situated on 3rd Avenue and the adjoining H & I blocks are sort of upper class Islamist ghettos. Within the cosmopolitan framework, they have created an Elite ghetto. Most of the home owners are Muslim and most shops are also run by them.
It is difficult for a person of other faith to get a building or residence on rent there. A Hindu friend running hostels wanted to rent a building and the owner denied, citing frivolous reasons; my friend referred the property to a Christian friend of his, who got the deal
sealed, albeit with lots of terms & conditions. In entire Anna Nagar, Hindus, Christians and Jains live without any segregation and are inter-mingling and inter-dependant on each other, but this one community has some serious issues adjusting with others. In I & H Blocks
in Anna Nagar East, one or two families settled down and it was followed by many others. Now the area has a Mosque, an Islamic center and a Madrasa as well. Couple of Muslim celebrities live in the area as well. Speak of settling in "cosmopolitan" locality!!
Meanwhile, the "frustrated" ones who aspire to live in cosmopolitan neighborhoods, as Arfa Begum claims they are, always complain that Anna Nagar became cosmopolitan despite being designed by B.S. Abdur Rahman, a Muslim. They believe it should have been an Elite Muslim ghetto.
