Hey Austinites and Longhorns! The next couple of days will bring some historically cold temperatures (single digits on Monday). ❄️

Here are some resources and information that I've gathered so you can prepare for any power outages or cold-related issues 👇
Some context: Gov. Abbott declared a statewide disaster in advance of the winter storm, warning of property damage & loss of life, via @meganmmenchaca @TexasTribune.

Austin expects historically low single-digit temperatures, unprecedented for 30+ years. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/12/texas-winter-weather/
As we've seen around @UTAustin, the power will go out as people crank up the heat.

To prepare, grab extra blankets, hand warmers, etc. to stay warm in case of an outage. Charge any portable batteries in advance so you can keep your phone on.

You can track outages in the Austin area through the @austinenergy website. Their number is 512-322-9100 if you need to report an outage or get information.

With temperatures below freezing, the pipes in your apartment/home may be affected. Here's some advice from Austin Water on preventing damage.

"Renters and tenants may be responsible for personal property damage caused by broken water pipes during severe weather."
UT students in need of assistance can contact Student Emergency Services. Their office is closed on the weekend, but the freezing weather is expected to continue into next week.

They are open M-F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and their number is 512-471-5017.

Make sure to bring in any plants that may be outside (they won't survive the cold). Bring pets indoors. If you have to drive, watch out for ice on the roads (we've seen those super scary pileups) and consider getting an emergency kit for travel. https://twitter.com/AustinHSEM/status/1360411791315128322?s=20
Many Texans are likely unfamiliar with driving in icy conditions. Be extra careful if you're on the road accordingly — apps like Google Maps should be able to reroute you around road closures, but you can also check road conditions around the state here:

Lastly, definitely follow local news outlets like @KVUE, @KXAN_News, and @statesman for information. I would also recommend following @AustinHSEM for information from the city.
