Good evening, people of Oklahoma and Texas! It has come to my attention that it's about to get a little northern in the southern plains.

While you have probably survived multiple land vortices (aka tornadoes), I have survived at least a dozen polar vortices in my 27 years. 1/
Here are some cold weather survival tips from a battle-hardened Wisconsin dairy farmer.

Wear layers, preferably wool or otherwise moisture-wicking. Cotton kills. You can always take clothes off, but you can't always put more clothes on.

Stay hydrated. You lose more moisture 2/
than you realize when the air is cold, and your skin especially suffers. Electrolytes or plain ol' water will do you just fine.

If you have a boot dryer, it will become your best friend in a hurry.

Long johns are always a good idea. If you don't have any, leggings will do. 3/
If you're calving or lambing right now, take extra precautions to keep babies' ears and feet dry. Frostbite won't show itself for another few weeks.

Bed heavy, and bed often.

Be liberal with the grain, cake, and dry hay. Rumens are an internal furnace like none other. 4/
Stock tank heaters are a godsend if you don't have them already.

Keep moving if you're outside. Moving water doesn't freeze.

Use moisturizer liberally and often. Sunscreen protects against windburn.

Be safe and be smart. Know your limits and ask for help. 5/
When the sun comes out (which it will) and shines on all that snow, wear sunglasses. It's blinding.

Last but not least, remember who you are. You are a tough bunch. This might shake you and this might break you, but it will strengthen you. You got this. 6/6
