I've seen this so many times in my life:

Bigoted people usually do not believe their prejudices are morally questionable.

They believe the fear, disgust, hatred, and rage that they feel toward their despised targets are logical, moral, natural, and completely justified.
This is why they believe that opposition to their bigotry and their attempts inflict harm upon their targets are all forms of tyranny.

They see those who oppose their bigoted behavior as people who promote unjust hatred and oppression against *them*. https://twitter.com/timberwraith/status/1360402624135241728
They believe their targets are a danger to them, their families, and their communities and they see people who oppose their bigotry as enablers of oppression against them and those who they wish to protect.
They see those who call for the protection of the oppressed as the true oppressors.
I don't know how one argues with that.

They're quite often convinced that their hatred and their violence are completely justifiable—that they are the ones who are the moral and good in society.
I mean, I tried to argue with people like this for decades.

They let me know that I was the asshole in the conversation—that their prejudice and hatred against their favorite targets were just, moral common sense.

In their eyes, I was obnoxious and cognitively defective.
I wasn't the asshole but they firmly believed I was a terrible person for challenging what they thought was a moral good and the rock solid truth.

How do you change attitudes like that?

I don't know. I failed in my attempts.
