It took me a while to stop myself from volunteering to serve everyone coffee or tea when we had guests at NYT 😅 It thankfully isn’t a thing here, as I came to realize https://twitter.com/amelieintokyo/status/1360359202426744833
But here is a perennial plug for my friend and former colleague @JshPhotog's series, Tea for CEOs, chronicling this very important role women play in Japan. (I think we might have gone to some of these interviews together.) https://jeremysuttonhibbert.photoshelter.com/gallery/2008-Japan-Tea-for-CEOs/G0000hLUMiPgGKy8
I was once astonished at a meeting tho when @jswatz got everyone coffee — I think that is just @jswatz!
Accurate. https://twitter.com/yesthatkarim/status/1360380412837658624
I had to serve tea when I worked at JETRO and I was told off that I put too much tea in the cups. I was only trying to be nice! But pro tip, the cups should be only 60-70% full.

And yes there are YouTube tutorials on tea serving manners. https://twitter.com/amelieintokyo/status/1360380863842762755
How to correctly serve tea
Yes this is an advanced pro tip — don’t bow over the cups — either move the tray or step to the side https://twitter.com/frankch09430586/status/1360383958052073475
My fav magazine in Japan was @NikkeiWoman which targets working women — but some of the content blew my mind, eg how uketsuke (receptionist?) was portrayed as aspirational — and there were advice columns on keeping your hands beautifully moisturized bc that’s critical to the job.
But it just goes to show that for many Japanese women, leadership roles feel completely beyond reach. I do hope a woman is tapped to succeed Mori as Tokyo Olympics chief — god knows Japan needs more female role models.
Now I miss Japanese magazines! What’s the best option to subscribe to them from overseas? Nikkei Woman, Casa Brutus, Popeye, Mono, Nylon, an•an, Kurashi No Techo.. I even religiously read those free magazines in the Tokyo subway 😭

Sorry for another meandering thred but, really, what is the best way to subscribe to Japanese magazines from overseas? I thot Fujisan offered subscriptions but I’m not seeing it. I’d love to get non-digital subscriptions if possible 😬 https://www.fujisan-us.com/
Honestly, what I miss most about Japan (apart from friends and family!)

1. The food
2. The magazines

Tho @KinokuniyaUSA no Nikkei Woman!? You offer NHK俳句 but no Nikkei Woman?
Yes.. people often ask me: Don’t I miss Japan, where everything is so cool? How come I live in NYC when I could live in Tokyo?

Truth is, I probably *would* prefer to live in Japan — if I wasn’t Japanese. But being a Japanese woman in Japan is.. tough. It was for me, anyway. https://twitter.com/lesleyito/status/1360418791453196290
I think as a “woman of color” (a completely new identity!) I face different challenges in the US.. but I’d say I still feel more empowered here in America than back in Japan. But that’s my personal experience. https://twitter.com/keiteay/status/1360422151443079169
