Nearly HALF of planet Earth is high seas—belonging to no nation & under almost no law. So much of the life there, like this blanket octopus, is a mystery to science.
HALF OF EARTH. We have so much left to discover...

The open ocean is more than half of Earth's surface & a little under half of Earth's surface is international waters aka high seas (dark blue). Think about that: all the politics, all the wars, almost every documentary you've ever seen. All on less than half our planet.
Since it can be hard to fathom the scale of it, think about it like this: find your country on the map, how many times could it fit into the high seas? Three? Five? How many habitats/ecosystems/species exist in your contry? How many more in the high seas? https://twitter.com/RebeccaRHelm/status/1353479524198002688
