My biggest issue with therapy is that it's not anti-fragile. It attempts to uncover out one big way for the human mind to be.

The client is trying to compute a bunch of updates for their mental models. A bunch of smaller updates is better than a single big update. https://twitter.com/42irrationalist/status/1360356406810054662
Those big updates are called modalities.

Therapy treats itself as being meta to thinking. But it's made of the same stuff as thinking. https://twitter.com/42irrationalist/status/1334699564545216513?s=19
Therapists aren't re-conceptualising and re-re-conceptualising their modalities based on their clients responses.

Modalities need to be temporary. Ideally, your client computes an update and leaves, forgetting everything they learned. https://twitter.com/QiaochuYuan/status/1198017217016680449?s=19
Humans like the idea of Truth that can be Uncovered. Therapists try to find that Truth.

Therapists try to make something permanent out of what's supposed to be only temporary. Therapists don't tweak their modalities enough. But modalities aren't discovered - they are invented.
Modalities are generalisations created in response to their clients thinking. Modalities spread like memes. Memes are optimised for their environment.

The environment shifts.

CBT in the water supply effect is a result of not blank slating hard enough.
I think CBT in the water supply is real. But the framing obscures another part of the problem.

People just get different mental knots compared to what they used to get in the past. Their beliefs arrange in different shapes.

Older methods for untying mental knots stop working.
