Excited to watch @AliceRGaby and others on the meet the authors panel today, on inclusion in Linguistics https://twitter.com/andries_coetzee/status/1354267233728552964
"Time to seize the moment" Anne Charity Hurley. There's a moment happening here in Australia too. We can make Linguistics a more inclusive place for Indigenous Australians, African Australians, Indigenous people of the Pacific region and all groups that are under represented
Number One thing she mentions is hiring people from different groups as permanent staff
Wesley Leonard points out that there's a lot of stuff out there for linguists to read to understand Indigenous perspectives on their languages
But unfortunately plenty of evidence that many people doing research on Indigenous languages are not reading this stuff
Time to think about how you prioritise your reading list!
@AliceRGaby shameless plug for Lesley Woods' forthcoming book on how linguists can work better with Indigenous Australians. Can confirm this is an excellent book and will definitely change things
Ignacio Montoya: the LSA articles bring ideas that are widely discussed on Twitter and seem a little obvious to scholars of colour, into the Linguistics establishment
Like to acknowledge what I've learnt from Indigenous Australians (Blak Twitter) and US scholars of colour
@ClemonsAris being about to talk about inclusion requires linguists to read more widely, learn from people in other fields
@AliceRGaby need to rethink authorship and what counts as a thesis, to value more what is valued by Indigenous communities
Had to tell a Masters student recently that producing a language resource with an Indigenous community is not a suitable minor thesis but sorry it's the best idea I've ever heard!
@ClemonsAris so important just to have these discussions and centralise them in our disciple
@AliceRGaby and others; interdisciplinarity is key to inclusion. Wesley Leonard: most Native American linguists are in other department, because they don't feel welcome in linguistics (same in Australia, right?)
Might have run out of steam with the live tweeting but can I just say this panel is the best thing I've seen for years! So definitely watch the YouTube on the LSA channel if you missed it
