MLB just eliminated the majority of, if not all baseball team social media account roles. I always assumed those staff were employed by the teams but Iâve now learned otherwise. This is terrible. Many teams had phenomenal staff that gave the team account a distinct character. /1
I saw how the Blue Jays account staff became familiar with fans, remembering their favourite players & engaging in ways that could make someoneâs day. This really added to the fan experience, because professional sports are both entertainment & a social experience /2
This interaction exploded into a meme. Blows my mind how many people reference it to this day. What a great interaction from one of Jays twitterâs favourite trolls @springer_stan and the person who was running the account. The staff were local Jays fans hired for their skills. /3
Iâm guessing MLB is going to retain some staff or fire everyone & fill a much smaller team to manage all the accounts. This means impersonalized, templated tweets. Less fan engagement. And a small team of multitasking overworked staff running 30 accts that will make mistakes. /4
Stuff like posting from the wrong team account or bad typos. All under the false pretense of MLB âlosing moneyâ and âefficiency.â What a bunch of horseshit. We need our team social media accounts to be Literally Us, the Blue Jays. Not Literally 5 Underpaid MLB Interns. /end
