The people we spend time with this decade will split into close friends and complete strangers.
This is the separation of social and media.
Here's a short thread on what's happening

Here's a short thread on what's happening

1) I tend to think of social media as a set of concentric circles. Rings 1 & 4 are about connection. Rings 2 & 3 are about status.
Ring 1 = intimate connection with friends.
Ring 4 = serendipitous connection with strangers.
New social platforms will be built for rings 1 & 4.

2) First, the resurgence of ring 1:
We're seeing a backlash to performative, status-seeking social media: people want to spend quality time online with close friends & family.
This means less Facebook & Instagram and more WhatsApp & Messenger.
This is more social than media.

3) Ring 4 is a similar concept but with strangers.
It’s AI-driven & allows people to discover creativity, learning, & connection online. TikTok is an early iteration, untethered from a social graph and letting strangers connect across the globe.

4) We used to have to rely on our real-life social graphs as a proxy for who to connect with online. Now, AI does a better job.
We'll see social media split into 1-to-1, small-group gatherings with our closest friends *and* into 1-to-many, large-group networks powered by AI.

5) The platforms in the middle—the last generation of winners—will fade.
They'll be replaced by a new generation of platforms that emphasize deep, intimate ties or serendipitous interaction.
Social media will be less about status & FOMO and more about connection & creativity.
