LA County is pushing many affordable housing projects with the aim to alleviate the homelessness crisis. There is no doubt that more housing is needed in LA, however, it is troubling that these apartment complexes are
being labeled as “affordable” when, upon closer look, that is not the case. Not all of the apartment complexes are fully “affordable”, for some only around 15% of the units are designated for low-income applicants, meaning the rest of the units are MARKET-RATE.
For example, the apartments set to replace the Florence Car Wash will only have 24 out of 192 units (12.5%) set aside for low income families. And not to mention that the application process is confusing and inaccessible.
As we saw with the Firestone Phoenix apartments we posted about previously, they released the application for a short window of time and during the holiday break!
There are currently 8 of these apt complexes completed or in the works in Florence-Firestone. After witnessing how the Florence Library was displaced & the land was sold to developers w/o consideration for the community, we feel really skeptical about the incoming apt complexes.
There needs to be more accessible and heavily publicized community engagement and outreach regarding these apartment complexes as well as more proactive engagement and action from our elected officials to address all the different concerns Florence-Firestone residents have.
