Happening Now: Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is about to give an update on the future of 38th and Chicago or George Floyd Square, which has been controlled by activists as a "autonomous zone" since George Floyd was killed there by police last May https://www.facebook.com/cityofminneapolis/videos/353770235651643
Last month I wrote about the politics at play between the mayor and the City Council: https://minnesotareformer.com/2021/01/21/who-will-decide-what-happens-to-38th-and-chicago/
Frey says the barricades that block off traffic originally protected the memorial but are now being used as a "screen for illicit activity" which is retraumatizing people in the neighborhood. And says the situation at hand is "not sustainable"
Frey says, the intersection is forever changed and must remain a memorial to George Floyd and a center for racial healing. He also says the area "is not and can not be an autonomous zone"
Frey says the intersection will be closed to vehicular traffic through the trial of Derek Chauvin, which begins next month, but will not be closed for city services (i.e. police and first responders)
Police Chief Medaria Arradondo says George Floyd Square is not an autonomous zone.
Police have largely avoided the area. Read @deenafaywinter: https://minnesotareformer.com/2021/01/11/volunteers-who-help-manage-george-floyd-square-work-with-the-bloods-gang-but-not-police-heres-why/
