I think "slogans" like "cancel culture" or "virtue signalling" or "[whomever] derangement syndrome" make it easy to avoid addressing real issues. Seems to me they represent superficial strategies to create a "strawman" category that can b dismissed w/o addressing the issue 1/8
Specifically concerning "cancel culture" I believe all ppl can grow, repent, learn from past sins & mistakes. No one shld b reduced in their humanity & b defined by the worst thing they have ever done (Sr. Helen Prejean). *However*... 2/8
...the entire criminal justice system is an eg of "cancel culture" (accountability & consequences). All too often certain populations were "cancelled" through deficient due process & unjust systems. There was no real outcry against this "culture" of large group "canceling" 3/8
The wealthy & powerful (celebrities, politicians, business "leaders" etc) were able to get away w the most vile & frequently illegal behavior bc no one who spoke out wld b believed. The abused, the poor, the oppressed were & have been "canceled" for most of human history 4/8
Now, primarily bc of phones that record video & social media, we r finally learning of truly disgusting behavior & holding accountable (to public opinion or the justice system or both) ppl in categories that until recently have enjoyed the privilege of "blanket immunity" 5/8
Now repugnant behavior might mean someone might lose their job or have their business boycotted or be voted out of office or be arrested. Those might not so much b examples of "cancel culture" as much as examples of justice, accountability & fairness 6/8
I'm suspicious that too many ppl currently outraged by "cancel culture" might really b outraged bc those being held to account w this current iteration of "cancel culture" look different than all the ppl who have been "canceled" for thousands of years 7/8
Let's b critical of oppressive soc systems & cultural attitudes & also treat each person & the events of their lives w the respect we all deserve. Cancel/hate the sin; love & help w the growth & repentance of the individual sinner. And try to cut out the "selective" outrage 8/8
