A THREAD regarding @uahhockey video streaming on @FloHockey and why it's been a problem. (1/12)
UAH's streams have been a mixed bag. Many agree that @Peyton_Turnage's announcing has been excellent, but the video portion leaves much to be desired. Some nights are worse than others, and last night's game against Minnesota State was one of those nights. (2/12)
Inconsistent zooming and brightness of the main camera. Switching to the ice-level camera during action, obscuring the view of the puck. Constantly showing video board graphics, even right after a whistle. It frankly can be irritating to watch. (3/12)
I live in North Carolina. In non-pandemic times I drive to Huntsville to cover at least two home series a season, but most of the time I'm watching on FloHockey to cover games. (4/12)
These issues are a problem for me and other writers who rely on the video stream to cover their teams, and for the folks who are shelling out $150 a year to watch these games. (5/12)
As you may know, UAH has been working with the @HuntsvilleHavoc to improve the arena experience at Charger games. It's been working well from what I've seen, which is great because UAH needs the help and is grateful for it. (6/12)
The video stream is produced by a contracted group from the Havoc that utilizes the video board as the video stream. As anyone who has watched the stream can attest, this has been a problem. (7/12)
The reason for this is because the Havoc primarily uses their cameras for in-game entertainment at their games. Because they don't need the multiple angles or replays that FloHockey requires, they use an AI camera for the game action instead. (8/12)
It seems this same approach for the main and on-ice cameras, as well as the video board, is being used for streaming UAH games. The result is the video presentation that feels geared toward the fan in the arena instead of the fan watching at home. That doesn't work. (9/12)
The contracted group needs to be properly guided on how to broadcast a hockey game on TV. They need to avoid using the ice-level camera when the puck is in play. They need to avoid showing video board graphics. They need to follow the puck better. (10/12)
I'm not sure how much can be improved this season with two home games remaining (with one being tonight), but the video streaming plan should be assessed and revised moving forward. Even though UAH is not actually running the video, this is a reflection on them. (11/12)
I'm not going to place blame on the Havoc or anyone in particular. I just want the issues to be resolved so there's a better broadcast that is enjoyed by fans and reflects well on UAH and everyone involved. ^MN (12/12)
