A little winter riding tread, because it’s #WinterBikeToWorkDay2021 and I’m sick of #COVID19AB. I’m going to post two pictures that are related. One is my footwear I use at -34 degrees Celsius, and the other is the reason why.
Yes these are some waterproof slip on shoes. I like them because I’m always late, and they are super stain resistant. They also look reasonably nice. They are not insulated or electrified.
Granted I have pretty good circulation but I also have a good grasp of respiratory mechanics. And here is a hint for anyone who wants to be a lot warmer in winter.
After you have bundled up your core and your head, the most significant source of heat loss is from your respiratory system. It is literally an internal radiator through which you pass your entire blood volume through every minute to 20 seconds depending on your exercise level.
If you lose it heat, you have to regenerate it, and at a point it costs you. Chill your core and your body’s response is to redirect blood from your extremities, making them cold and numb.
A heat exchanger retains some of that heat, and warms and humidifies the air so your upper airway doesn’t have to. It not only allows me to dress down a layer, but also reduces exercised induced asthma.
Now to complete the deal, a pair of insulated pants and wool socks ensure minimal heat loss of blood before it gets to my feet.
I wear it when the temp drops below -15. It’s a remarkable device showed to me by @coldbike. It does have its draw backs. My wife tells me it makes me look like a pig. I’m ok with that. 🐷s are smart.
