...the hard work that we can see is going into it, and the progress that's been made. In the last three weeks:

Original expectation was 80,000 a week by end of Jan, but today we're told that was always the absolute maximum capacity...

...and while we're still a bit behind the national average, the gap has closed considerably with 21% of adults vaccinated compared to England's 23% (as of last Sunday, it will be higher now!)

Playing catch-up was never going to be easy after the "slow start” which some blamed on local decision making but health bosses attributed to a supply decision made nationally (which the Department of Health said it wouldn’t go into the details of)…

…but whatever the reason, it’s now mid-Feb and all the signs are that the target of vaccinating the top 4 priority groups by the start of next week will be hit:

...and before we've even got there, things are already moving to the next stage with over 65s being contacted and the conversation turning for the first time today to the over 50s, with the hope being they'll all have been offered a first dose by May

There have, without doubt, been some bumps along the road (booking links not working, delays opening some centres, letters sent to children by mistake etc.) which health bosses have acknowledged and apologised for

And we'll continue to scrutinise because that's what we're here for and it's in everyone's interest for the vaccination programme to go as well as it can, but I shall also raise a glass tonight to those who are saving lives with each and every jab
