On being God-fearing...

In the Bible, encouragement to "fear" God means more than being afraid. It means to hold in highest awe. Notice how, for David, fear parallels love...

The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.
(Psalms 147:1)
Also note the two different ways "being afraid" / "fear" (same root word in Hebrew) is used. When Israel was afraid of God...

Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
(Ex 20:20)
Bottom line...

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
(1 John 4:18)

Let us stay in absolute awe of God's love, so that it shapes who we are becoming.
