Mario Draghi has formed his government. This ain't a repeat of the Monti government. Yes, there are a number of technocrats - including as finance minister - but it's also full of political heavyweights, from all parties. A political government with a technocratic PM. 1/n
Draghi clearly wants politicians to take ownership of this government. Draghi will call the shots, but the political parties won't be able to avoid their responsibility. 2/n
There are technocrats in key roles with spending powers: finance minister, energy and environment, digital transformation. This could be a way to ensure that the money coming from the EU is well spent. 3/n
Draghi has traditionally thought that politics ultimately belongs to the politicians. These choices confirm this view. So this is not the revolution some were hoping for, but it should provide Italy with a stable government and some well-needed competence at a time of crisis. 4/4
