☀️tips for ppl boosting fundraisers☀️

** these are tips for people who are boosting and donating— the people fundraising themselves already have enough on their plate, lets help ease their burden!
** this thread is basically compiled information from what i’ve read from black trans women on here with experiences fundraising and what they wish us nonblack people would do more of when trying to help out. all credit goes to them!
☀️ donate to people’s direct links (better than gfm!!!) it can be rewarding to see the goal get closer on gfm but gfm takes a % of the donations and the recipient sometimes needs to jump through hoops to withdraw the money. direct links are almost ALWAYS better. put aside your
feelings and donate to the direct links first if you are able.
☀️ post proof and ask people to match your donations! posting proof is inherently performative AND it can get more people to send $$. again put aside your feelings and ask for matches
☀️ remember to block out full names in screenshots, using a built in photo editor (sometimes twitter stickers can be scrubbed)
☀️ to switch things up, instead of asking people to match you, you can commit to matching others instead. if you have a relatively large sum of money like $50+, commit to matching donations up to that amount and encourage people to contribute. of course you still should be
donating your sum in the first place even if your match goal doesnt get met, but it can be a good motivator for your followers.
☀️ if you have time, put your marketable skills to use- offer to make drawings, sketches, icons, banners, designs, readings, songs, etc. and commit to donating the proceeds. posting receipts can help keep things transparent too
☀️ if you see a trusted mutual or friend who would like do donate but does not have access to the preferred method of donating, offer to transfer it for them if you are able and send screenshots for proof
☀️ a rt helps, but making your own post helps even more. the more rts a post has the less likely it is to attract donations, which is why new posts with lower numbers are better especially if you see the person fundraising tweeting something like
how donations have slowed, you can usually find this info on their profile or in quote tweets
☀️ when someone who has consistently been fundraising disappears for a few days, it does not mean they no longer need money. fundraising is tiring and difficult work and they likely just need a break. it is up to us to continue posting for them when they are gone- people should
not have to log on and beg for money every day to survive. let’s pitch in and make sure their links are spread even when they’re taking a break.
☀️ when part of a goal is met on gfm, it does not mean that the person’s funds are available, they may have already been spent. just because someone has raised x amt of money already does not mean they have that much currently. ppl who meet their goals still need help.
☀️ when making your own post for someone, put effort into it! read the gfm description and bio and include important bits in your post, like if they are black or trans, houseless, have disabilities, and what theyre fundraising for if possible (shelter, surgery, bills, etc)
☀️ it also helps to mark your posts with emojis and line breaks, especially if they are urgent. emojis are eye catching and line breaks help organize info. include cashtags, pypl, and vnmo links as well
☀️ censor the following words because twitter tends to deplatform them or you may attract bots/spam: fundraiser, vnmo, pypl, cshpp, boost, donate, match

let me know any other words to censor in the replies!
(i am leaving the non-branded words uncensored here for accessibility purposes)
☀️ people do see what their mutuals like and reply to, so drop a like and a boost in the replies if you can. use quote tweets to boost your own posts
☀️ from my observations, people are most active on here between 4-9pm usa eastern time, so it’s a good time to boost things that need attention. let me know if your experiences differ!
☀️ this may seem contentious but guilt works. when i say “i have 5k followers and only x people donated/boosted” or “we’ve only raised x so far” i usually get more interactions. try to convince people to interact by reminding them why they follow you in the first place.
☀️ on that topic, ask accounts with large followings (5k+) to boost links. ALL nonblack people should be helping by boosting people’s fundraisers on here because we have all built our platform by appropriating aave and images and memes of black people, so we should all be using
our platforms to help them materially. if you consider your account too “informational” to boost fundraisers, you should really reconsider why you’re on here and why you’re a communist in the first place, as material help is much more useful than any sort of bite sized twitter
informational thread could ever be.
☀️ if you’re in group chats with friends you are closer to, share links in there as well and ask them to boost and donate. asking people directly (1 on 1) is usually more effective at holding them accountable
☀️ splitting up a goal into smaller steps can generate donations, such as “if 5 people can match my $20 we can raise $100 today!”
☀️ block and report accounts who accuse people of scamming or are in general harassing people. ask your followers to report as well, as more reports flags twitters attention quicker. reporting for hacked or spam is usually the best option.
☀️ if you have friends who are fundraising and need a graphic made (sometimes having banners sharable on instagram and stuff can help boost visibility) offer to help them. you can use apps like phonto and canva to make graphics on your phone
that’s all i have for now, feel free to share other tips in the replies and i’ll add them to the thread!
