TYRON, an album by @slowthai
(in-depth breakdown)
slowthai is an artist from the UK and he’s been making big moves for the alternative rap scene. i’ve never seen someone make this much noise in the UK since skepta when he dropped konnichiwa. this is the stepping stone for new UK rappers who want to branch out into new sounds.
concept:
the idea of having two sides is quite interesting, the first side is full of those aggressive bangers we all know and love slowthai for and they go dumb hard. the second side is thai at his most raw, the most introspective selection of songs in his discography yet.
motif:
slowthai uses imagery of a red apple. it’s a metaphor that refers to him and this album. red is a very aggressive colour, but yellow has a lot of soft and calm undertones. when you bite into an apple you see it for what it actually is. that’s what this album is like.(1)
those colour connotations are so relatable to slowthai as a person, because on the outside he’s a loud and energetic character. however on the inside he isn’t, he’s aware of his shortcomings and he displays his vulnerability especially on side b of the record. a genius concept.
45 SMOKE:
an amazing way to introduce the entire album. the first half is full of that “in your face” aura that we’re all familiar with then after there’s a beat switch. no one has ever heard thai on this sound before and it’s his way of saying, “don’t expect the usual music”.
CANCELLED:
slowthai and skepta team up as skepthai on this track and i don’t think there’s someone that thai works with better. they bounce off each other so well and it’s just a banger. that bass after the beat switch is godly and the music video is easily his best.
MAZZA:
asap rocky joins slowthai on a psychedelic trip for their long awaited collaboration. it shows thai’s versatility to adopt different styles of bangers, in this case it sounds like he’s been influenced by playboi carti and he’s executed it well. flacko went so crazy too.
VEX:
nobody wants to mess with slowthai, he makes sure that everyone listening knows that he’s on his gang shit as he says “beg somebody try test me”. it’s a violent sounding track with great replay value, makes you feel bad asf. his flow is mad too i love how hard this goes.
WOT:
OH. MY. GOD. as soon as he played this on his instagram live i knew i NEEDED that in my playlist. when the only thing you have to say about a song is “i wish it was longer” then you know it’s a slapper. that instrumental is mental. my favourite off side a for sure.
DEAD:
it’s impossible to not bop your head to this as soon as you hear it for the first time. thai enters with his signature, yelpy and slow rap style. he cements his place in the game as one of the best and all power to him for that. he’s easily the best out of this new wave.
PLAY WITH FIRE:
while on side a, it seems like the calmest on it. it would make sense as it’s the last track on the first side. it’s a vibe, a great segway into the second half. the last part of it is the beginning of the development of the deeper side of the album, side b.
i tried:
a phenomenal track. the instrumental is so dreamy and it evokes a sense of nostalgia. but when you look into the lyrics it’s quite depressing. lines that just make you look down in sadness. it’s crazy how this is the same guy who was on the previous tracks.
focus:
thai essentially assures the listener that he’s trying his best to “focus” away from everything that brings him down emotionally. he misses his family. he detests those who said he wouldn’t make it and loves that he proved them wrong. but he’s still fed up with himself.
terms:
slowthai teams up with dominic fike with the occasional voice memo from denzel curry. the chorus is about accepting what you have and realising that you could be in a worse situation so don’t take it for granted. thai mentions his relationship with drugs and life. deep.
push:
deb never’s vocal performance lifts me up, it’s so good. relationships can be crazy, when you find someone you fall in love with, it seems like nothing else matters. you’d do anything for that person but when it’s not reciprocated it’s painful but “i guess that’s life”.
nhs:
thai teaches the listener that you can’t have one thing without appreciating the other. and that you have to think about the present at all times because thinking about anything else isn’t ideal. he also shouts out the nhs who have been doing god’s work over here in the UK.
feel away:
this is easily the best single from the album. it’s just magical. this is the peak display of his versatility. it’s dedicated to his brother Michael John who unfortunately passed at a very young age. it’s such a beautiful track, i love james blake’s singing on here.
adhd:
thai has said before that this was his favourite song off the album. and it’s not hard to see why. it’s so emotional and raw. you get thrown into his mind. it’s mostly calm but there’s the occasional screaming and then the last part shows his anger at the world.
amazing.
end of thread.
