so i’m thinking about vex and jester (per usual) and i’m wondering if the theme of forgiveness is something laura’s done on purpose?
they’ve both deeply explored the complex role forgiveness plays in the moving on process 1/10

carving "sinaeth" into fenthras was incredible. one of the most important convos of c1 was vex talking to percy about forgiveness. she encouraged percy to forgive himself FOR him, not anyone else. she says a similar thing to kaylie about not harboring hate in her heart in ep 83.
even in 94 when vex says she doesn't forgive scanlan but she's trying to not hate him then in 99 when percy is angry, she says "i think it's a matter of forgive" and was ok with however long that took. said something similar to pike in 100 about it being hard to forgive family.
making a point to reach out to syldor was huge and something she 100% wouldn't have fathomed at the beginning…when she said she didn’t want syldor’s blood in her veins. building a relationship with velora was the main catalyst bc it's not the kid’s fault syldor fucking sucks.
jester's heading down a similar path as well. the way she wholeheartedly forgave marion for shutting her in, the gentleman for not being around, artagan for being a phony, even essek for having a hand in the war. she extends olive branches so easily, too easily in some cases.
in 92 when beau asked jester how she forgave the gentleman so quickly and she says grudges feel "like poison inside of you" directly reflects what vex told percy and kaylie. harboring darkness and hate often hurts YOU more than the other party, prevents YOU from moving forward.
seems like laura is implying forgiveness should be an internal, personal process. main divergence is jester is so unwilling to experience negative emotions that she uses forgiveness as a poor defense mechanism whereas vex used it for healing. i’ve compared their emotions before

jester quickly letting go is just as damaging as vex holding on for too long.
jester’s always happy facade causes extensive repression and unpacked grievances.
vex letting resentment consume her could’ve jeopardized some of her most valued relationships: velora, scanlan, percy.

it begs the questions of WHEN does the forgiveness process start? how soon is too soon? how long is too long?
there’s no answer! but looking at these two helps me realize i need to be more conscious of when grudges DO feel like a poison but also when i’m NOT letting myself feel.

examining vex and jester side by side is so interesting! they mirror each other in a lot of ways
i just think the way laura bailey plays her characters is neat! she’s so smart! i want to know her thought process…
