I dare you to try to find a school's admissions criteria on the city's online portal. I'll wait. https://www.myschools.nyc/en/schools/high-school/17949
Turns out you have to click on the school name alllll the way at the bottom of the page, which then brings you to a pretty generic description of the admissions method. What is "artifact 1" you might ask? Well, you'll have to go to the school's separate website for that!
If you've made it to Beacon's website, here's what you'll find for "artifact 1" and the rubric used to evaluate it. This is a pretty significant change from the past, when the school used grades and test scores.
This isn't really to pick on Beacon. But just imagine being a 13 year old trying to navigate any of this, especially if your parents don't have a lot of time or resources to help -- some parents pay consultants for this!
