Jujutsu Kaisen - Episode 17 thread

A thread on what is, so far, my favorite episode of the anime adaptation. Strong visuals and OSTs all around, but also a lot of characterization that I will try to dissect here

#呪術廻戦 #JujutsuKaisen
The fight between Miwa & Maki is a pure demonstration of sakuga and ingenious tactics
This cut also showcases how Miwa's Simple Domain works : a spark pops up as the pole of Maki's glaive enters the 2,21m range and triggers a reflex.
Done by a 17yo btw. Chapeau. https://twitter.com/Vercreek/status/1357767373827133440?s=20
I like the quick shots focused on each weapon to showcase what's said here, the difference in reach.

Overall, this fight helps us get accustomed to Maki fighting. Great physically and tactically.
I have only seen a few people actually catch the fact that the crows are what allows Mei Mei and the teachers / provisors to watch the event.
Mei Mei says animals are fickle, understand capricious, just like her personnality.
She looks down the whole time she is talking to Gojo, just not interested as there's no meny in play.

And then looks up at the camera, introducing herself as well as her motives to us
This sequence, with Ijichi presenting the talismans' mechanism is just another example of how much animators care about this show down to every single detail :

the grenade's explosion disturbs him as he speaks
Onto the next fight we go

By giving us time to realize what's going to happen, this shot makes us brace for impact.

Thus making the hit seem powerful, you could almost worry for your own cheek.
I'm fond of this transition into Momo landing seated on the broom without changing the camera angle
Then Momo tackles the matter of scars and their meaning for Jujutsu sorcerers, the difference between women & men.

A point I'll talk about in more detail in a manga spoiler section at the end of the thread
Nobara is of the opinion that being a jujutsu sorcerer is all about strength, she doesn't think there shouldn't be a difference between sexes, staying true to her character.

She believes everyone should be judged based on their abilities to accomplish the tasks they're handed
Momo, due to her power, has the high ground during most of the fight. But it also emphasizes her seniority and the fact she is trying to give Nobara a lecture.

Her gaze being directed downwards has this effect too, it almost looks like she thinks the viewers are ingnorant too
We get this exy ass shot of Nobara rearranging her hair as she mentions she's used to being knocked around. This is a detail that has not been adapted from the manga and I'll come back to it later when it's relevant again.
This line in the second picture is a really strong choice of words and makes the Zen'in family's policy really clear to the audience. No pity, women and those without special powers are ignored.
This clip with a switch a lens focus between Mai and the moths represents all of what's been said for the last 30s.

Mai stands motionless, just like that one moth on the right while the others are moving. She is ostracized.
"the others" suggest Mai isn't a unique case inside the family.

The camera being above Nobara's shoulder could be seen as Momo's speech starting to weigh on Nobara, annoying her. As a matter of fact, in her next shot she's gripping her hammer harder out of frustration
Will talk about this in the manga spoiler section.
Having the Mai/Maki comparison brought here teaches you to learn who a person really is before judging them.

Just as in Yuji's case.
She just adds what I take as "have you tried thinking for yourself instead of following others' logic?" to bring an end to her point.
Viewers probably got impressed here and may have wondered how she did that.

Her "haiprin" technique allowed her to make her cursed energy flow out of her nails to blow the tres up, making Momo's flight more difficult
As said before, she is used to getting knocked around. And that refers to her training with Panda where she practised how to fall. She showcases it by completing a perfect landing here
