7/ #Cyprus is only 65 kilometers away from #Turkey. In other words, Turkey has a huge military base (or aircraft carrier as Davutoglu calls it) on its south coast.
8/Hence, whoever controls the island is able to pose a serious threat against Turkey’s south coast which has a length of about 600 km
9/ If the Power that controls (e.g #Greece) #Cyprus were also in control of the Aegean islands, #Turkey would be effectively surrounded on two fronts.
10/ In terms of trade, the island is close to Turkey’s southern harbours, such as Mersin. Actually,all the Turkish southwestern ports are under the cover of #Cyprus. Whoever controls the island is able to have command over, or at least exert pressure on, these #Turkish ports.
11/ Is obvious from this short analysis that #Cyprus geography, in addition to the advantages provided by the occupation of its northern part, acts as a shield to protect #Turkey from the south!
