Just finished watching Félix Auger-Aliassime beat Denis Shapovalov at the #AusOpen in straight sets (I PVRed the match, I was not pulling the all-nighter when I worked 8:30-3:30 all week).

Here are my thoughts: (thread)
Overall, great match from both guys. Very high-quality hitting, some really incredible rallies. Took some amazing shot making just to win a point. The future of Canadian tennis is extremely bright.
In the end FAA was the more consistent of the two and that was the difference. Too many errors and too many missed serves from Denis. Félix was rock-solid from the baseline, keeping the pressure on and forcing Denis to do too much and draw errors, which Denis obliged
This was the kind of match I want to see Félix play. He does not need to go for too many winners. His rally shots are so strong he can just bludgeon opponents into submission. Often he tries to do too much and makes mistakes, but today he sat back and hit his shots safely
Félix really should follow this method more often. He can afford to take a little bit off and be consistent and force errors instead of going for winners too often. Tonight, his focus on consistency was what won him the match. He can still attack and go for winners, just be smart
FAA gets a huge break in the next round as he will face Aslan Karatsev in R4, who upset 8th seed Diego Schwartzman. FAA and Karatsev have met twice on lower tours, splitting H2H 1-1. Karatsev is ranked 114. Huge opportunity here for FAA to reach his first Slam QF
This win felt like a statement win for FAA. He rose to the occasion in a big moment and beat a higher-ranked opponent in a high-pressure situation. FAA has had a habit of choking and today would have been prime for that, but he didn't. Hopefully today's attitude becomes the norm
As for Denis, all he can do is shrug and move on from this one. He did not play too badly. Sure, a few too many missed serves and UNFs and he'll regret blowing break leads in the first two sets, but he shouldn't really blame himself. FAA simply outplayed him today.
Overall, the scoreline does not really do the quality of this match justice. It was closer than the 3-set scoreline indicated. It was high level tennis from both men and the first two sets really could have gone either way. FAA was just a little more solid in the key moments
More matches like this from these two in the future please 😁😁
