When I started writing publicly, I found comfort in Psalm 37. There was a season when I longed for more for my writing career. But I returned to this. “Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.” Some versions say befriend faithfulness.
I love that. In the years since then, Psalm 37 in its entirety has been my go to for my writing or what I’d consider my ministry. It addresses every aspect of befriending faithfulness & pitfalls of envy & power. When asked how to publish a book or gain followers it’s often with
good intentions. But my advise could be summed up with Psalm 37. Some bullet points-Delight yourself in the Lord, dwell in the land (put down roots with your people) cultivate faithfulness. I usually say don’t fixate on fame or platform, serve your readers, no matter how small.
These days I don’t yearn for more followers or a bigger platform. With my limited capacity I can barely manage the one I have. But I’ve served my readers as best as I’m able. Faithfulness is a friend to me. Some are given a bigger portion, & some hustle and scheme for more.
But unless you’ve fallen in love with with Jesus, trusting he’s a friend to you & you’ve dwelled faithfully in his presence & in community, it won’t do anyone a damn bit of good, least of all you. It’s not just celebrity that’s toxic. It’s detachment from Christ who fulfills us.
