Stop saying "schools are safe" when what you mean is "school transmission rates are no higher than community rates" and "I think the risk is worth it because the costs of schools remaining closed are so high." Those are not the same thing! 1/4 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/11/upshot/schools-reopening-coronavirus-experts.html
It may be the right call that schools should reopen because of kids' learning loss, mental health and social/emotional needs, needing a safe place to go and regular meals, and parents needing to stay in the workforce and not lose our minds. BUT 2/4
That doesn't mean there is no risk, or that teachers and parents are irrational or selfish to be worried about those risks. Some teachers, kids and family members who would not get COVID with schools closed will get it with schools open, and some will die. 3/4
If school transmission rates are similar to community rates, then if you are currently staying home, i.e. not being in the community, then your risk will go up if you go to school. Again, maybe worth it on balance? But it's much more complicated than "schools are safe." 4/4
