The living & work conditions on Canal were highly segregated & atrocious. The Americans were paid in gold coins while the West Indians were paid in silver coins gold equating a higher pay wage. This is what initially inspired Garvey & formed his ideologies of global Black unity
Here’s my great uncle detailing the segregated living conditions the Black West Indian workers were subjected to & how they got paid 9 CENTS AN HOUR yes you read that correctly. The gold coins whites were paid with equated $1 US while the silver coins Blacks received = .50 cents

community in Panama & formed his own offshoot of Garvey’s UNIA called the Jamaican Benevolent Society which fought for rights & unified Jamaican community in Panama
