Happy Black History Month. While interviewing Rasta Nini in Colon 🇵🇦 he brought us to the park where Marcus Garvey founder of the Pan Africanist movement first began giving his speeches after observing the terrible conditions Black West Indian workers were subjected to in Panama
The living & work conditions on Canal were highly segregated & atrocious. The Americans were paid in gold coins while the West Indians were paid in silver coins gold equating a higher pay wage. This is what initially inspired Garvey & formed his ideologies of global Black unity
Here’s my great uncle detailing the segregated living conditions the Black West Indian workers were subjected to & how they got paid 9 CENTS AN HOUR yes you read that correctly. The gold coins whites were paid with equated $1 US while the silver coins Blacks received = .50 cents
Here is my great grandfather. Inspired by many of the Garvey meetings he attended he organized the Jamaican 🇯🇲 community in Panama & formed his own offshoot of Garvey’s UNIA called the Jamaican Benevolent Society which fought for rights & unified Jamaican community in Panama 🇵🇦
