I still can’t believe with ALL the information out there, and all the posts, even all the major brands using it correctly, some businesses are STILL sharing #LunarNewYear
messages by saying Chinese New Year. This has been a pet peeve of mine my entire life.

Unless you are ONLY speaking to the Chinese community, you should not be saying Chinese New Year. Even then, New Year, Lunar New Year, obviously applies too!
All sorts of Asian groups and communities around the world celebrate #LunarNewYear
.
Inclusive language matters!

Sometimes it feels like people and brands willfully choose to say Chinese New Year and pretend they’ve never heard of Lunar New Year.
Don’t oversimplify or generalize “Asian” as one identity you can brush across all Asian people.

Like seriously, if you’re a brand—especially a brand located in or with an audience primarily OUTSIDE of China—and you’re choosing to jump on new year messaging but you choose to say Chinese New Year??? DON’T even bother.
so, Happy #LunarNewYear
to those who celebrate!
Hey look at that, new year greetings that don’t exclude or alienate anyone. So it CAN be done?!!

Didn't wake up thinking oh first thing on the to do list is to rant about Lunar New Year language but then I saw a local brand account that is NOT BIPOC post "Happy Chinese New Year" and it sent me in a raging spiral so here we are. lol
Also this is primarily a rant about brands / businesses trying to capitalize on or use the new year for marketing (filling their content calendars?!). I understand individuals aren't to stay on top of language for a new year they don't celebrate so education there is much softer.
Brands literally have to say, oh we should post about the new year, wait, what is the new year? Oh let's do some research. Weird, there's a lot of " #LunarNewYear
" language and I keep seeing other brands say it BUUUUUT let's go with this less inclusive greeting instead!
