There are lots of people (myself included) warning about the dangers of celebrity culture, especially within Christianity. These are good. We should continue to discuss these, but I also think something is missing.
Most of us will never be a Christian celebrity. We won’t have the big stage or the millions of social media followers, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the opportunity to sin in similar ways.
Centering the discussion around fame can be another way of focusing on sin “out there,” as a problem “those people” deal with. I don’t care who our “those people” are, that is a dangerous attitude to stoke in our hearts.
You and I have influence over people. It may be only a small influence over a small group, but that influence can still be used in sinful, selfish ways. We can become blind to those temptations in our own heart if all we ever think about is abuse by “celebrities."
We need safeguards that can be instituted by everyone and red flags that can be identified in our own hearts, not just of people who run major ministries or pastor large churches.
Obviously, people in those circumstances need accountability in unique ways. But we all need it. And the moment we forget that, we are in danger.
