Q for higher ed qualitative people: Does our field have a methodology problem? My take: Yes a focus on teaching the Creswell 5 has left a generation of researchers believing you have to align with a specific tradition in qual for a study to be rigorous @ashegrads @AERADivJGradNet
This is reinforced when submitting a qual proposal to @ASHEoffice with these being the options to select and there being no general qual option. The 5 are helpful in answering some research questions, but not all, and qualitative research is a methodology in and of itself.
This is a recent trend (a look at qual studies in top higher ed journals as recent as 5-10 years ago reveals this) and has negative consequences.
Researchers spend time bending their studies to fit a specific approach and reviewers question the rigor of studies that don't. Researchers dedicate space in manuscripts that in some cases would be better used being transparent and detailed about their actual research process.
