THREAD: Feels like working in HE requires exhausting levels of cognitive dissonance 4 so many of us; I love my subject, teaching, students + colleagues but so much of the system is broken, breaking, brutal + dehumanising. But we carry on because we care for ideas and education 1/
2/ like many of us I keep thinking "this time last year...." and how much + how little has changed; we were prepping for UCU strike action. Since then there has been so much more work - adapting, caring, learning, teaching, in such awful circumstances and I see how this is taking
3/ a toll on so many colleagues, we of course have families, loved ones, different living conditions, but still so much good work going on I'm in awe. But so much is wrong with the system, thats not for today because I am cold and tired and i've got marking to do but I wanted to
4) send love + strength + solidarity to all struggling in HE, especially kindred ECRs, part time and precarious workers. Media calls for fee refunds dismiss, ignore all the labour + care + are hard to see (nb student concerns are valid + rent is different of course) Take care xx
5) PS and of course all those brilliant folk forced out by the system, and non academic staff who are working so hard during the pandemic. We may not be on campus but the university is very much open of course and I see what is happening and why it needs fixing xx
6) I should plan threads before I start them cos I also want to add something about the assumptions around class and income and HE. We need to fight to make space for everyone, like so many other inequalities covid makes it more obvious re access to space, IT, WFH, time etc
apologies for jargon. ECR = early career researcher (I'm one of these; its not synonymous with age despite stereotypes) HE = Higher Education (universities) WFH = working from home. Is it weekend yet?
