One of the things I find messes with the heads of many people in the NFT space is looking around at what sells and what doesn't, and finding conflicting messages in that. Scarcity is key. And yet a big name mints hundreds of pieces in one night and sells for a fortune. Etc.
Or it's about the art/artist/story, yet people buy hype drops and flip them maybe without even knowing what they bought. Did they even look at the art? That's even before we get into that time people sold tweets. It can be tough to figure out. But here's a thing...
NFTs are lots of different things. If we wonder why a piece of art doesn't sell while seeing something baffling rake in money, these might not be comparable. Could be like trying to sell a painting while wondering why Pop figures are flying off the shelves. Not the same thing.
There could be loads of people into NFTs and that doesn't mean they are art collectors. Just like lots of people buy stuff in shops and that doesn't mean they're art collectors either. I know it sounds obvious but I got into this via the art. So it took at while for me to see.
Because NFTs are new, there is a tendency to lump them all in together. Too often I wasn't comparing like with like. I think as things grow, the distinctions will become much clearer. NFTs are all sorts of different things. And some are like celebrity tokens and that's okay.
Here's another thing I realised while watching NFT projects: I'm an artist. That's the space I'm in. That's what I do. So many of those other things, they're just not me. And that's fine. As it happens, as an artist, I can be very thankful for how I'm doing here.
So as an artist, I totally appreciate those in the space who really love the art itself. Who appreciate and understand and celebrate the art. Thank you! Thank you to places like @MOCDA and people like @fi_lor and @SerenaTabacchi And to @KnownOrigin_io, a true home for artists.
And thanks to all the artists too – it's a fantastic warm art community. I love seeing what you do. It's so inspiring. Keep creating. You're all amazing! It is a strange, new, exciting space and you all make it what it is. That's all.
