Ok, #pedstwitter #fammedtwitter #MedTwitter and particularly #adolescentmed, I’m trying to crowdsource better ways to approach conversations about BMI with my teenage patients. Looots of BMI >95th %ile here, but also know that’s a really poor marker at best. Textbook = unhelpful.
I mostly have trouble figuring out how to initiate a conversation without bringing weight into it in some way and I hate that, because this is already a population that’s at risk of eating disorders and poor body image and most of them are already hearing this at home & school
I mean, yes, I ask about what they’re eating and encourage vegetables and fruits and physical activity and screen time and counsel on those. Where I feel I could improve is how to explain when labs are indicated and why, in a way that's sensitive and non-judgmental.
But I just feel like there’s something missing in the way I’m approaching this, and it’s been of particular concern given how much physical activity has decreased and screen time has increased d/t remote school changes with #COVID19
So. Thoughts? Suggestions? (Adding in Peds/adolescent psych, too) @RFentonMD @RheaBoydMD @ChaseTMAnderson @jack_turban @FamDoc_Forest @vboggiano @Ledgemd @queerdoctor @DrBryanLeyva @BrightZhou
